Another Successful Planting Event!

Maclure-Planting-1-225x300On Saturday March 24th, The Fraser Valley Conservancy and 38 volunteers spent the day planting over 600 plants and trees in Maclure Wetlands.  In the Fraser Valley, wetlands have declined by as much as 75% due to conversion to farm land or for urban development.  The Maclure Wetland Restoration and Habitat Creation Project will help reverse that trend by restoring the 16 acre marsh-wetland habitat and increasing public awareness by educating the public, university students and volunteers about the importance of healthy ecosystems for the protection of critical habitat and wildlife.

The wetland, located in Abbotsford, was donated to FVC in the fall of 2008. The wetland provides homes for many species including the provincially blue-listed Mountain Beaver, Green Herons, and Red-Legged Frogs and is also a potential habitat for the red-listed Pacific Water Shrew.

FVC recently received funding from Environment Canada EcoAction Community Funding Program and the RBC Blue Water Project Leadership Grant to help preserve the existing biodiversity and restore some of the degraded habitat to its full potential.
