SUMMARY:Ryder Lake Residents - Temporary Fencing Removal
DESCRIPTION:** This event is for Ryder Lake residents only**\nDo you live in Ryder Lake? Are you interested in helping nature and wildlife in your neighbourhood? We have an event coming up that might interest you! Join us and help the Fraser Valley Conservancy remove the temporary fencing installed on Elk View Road. \nIn late February/early March\, the amphibians return to their important breeding wetland in Ryder Lake. There is a crossing structure called the “Toad Tunnel” that runs under Elk View Road. The installed fencing helped guide amphibians to the crossing structure in March and April. Now the fencing is ready to be removed until it is needed again in June/July for the migration of baby toads back to the forest. \n  \n\nWildlife Protection Event – Temporary Fencing REMOVAL\nWe need your help to remove the 150 meters of silt fencing along Elk View Road!\n\n\nWhy It’s Helpful\n\nIn late February/early March\, the amphibians are travelling to their important breeding wetland. There is a crossing structure called the Toad Tunnel that runs under Elk View Road.\nThe fencing helps guide amphibians to the Toad Tunnel so they can safely pass under the road.\nIn May\, we need to remove this previously installed temporary fence!\n\nResponsibilities\n\nBe prepared to spend a few hours outdoors alongside a road.\nHelp remove the fence using tools like shovels and staple removers.\n\nTraining/Equipment\n\nAll training and gear required will be provided on the day of the event\n\nSafety\n\nDress appropriately for warm or wet weather (check the forecast ahead of time!)\nWear sturdy footwear and bring your work gloves. We will have some available if you need them.\nSafety vests will be provided (let us know if you want to bring your own!).\n\nSetting and Location\n\nOutdoors in the right-of-way adjacent to Elk View Road.\nRyder Lake Neighbourhood.\nParking: The mailboxes on Elk View Road.\nThere are no shelter or bathroom facilities on site.\n\nCommitment\n\nThursday\, May 18th\, 2023\n9:00 AM – 10:30 AM.\nRAIN OR SHINE\nThis event may be rescheduled if there is too much rain. We have an event coming up that might interest you!  \n  \nJoin us as we explore a wetland in Ryder Lake\, looking for amphibians and their egg masses. Learn ID skills and take this knowledge back to your own backyards! \n  \n\nWildlife Monitoring Event – Pond Checks\nThe Work\n\nHelp us monitor amphibian breeding by joining FVC staff at a wetland in Ryder Lake.\nYou will be looking for frogs\, toads\, salamanders\, and their egg masses!\n\nWhy it’s Helpful\n\nAs soon as the weather warms up\, many of our frogs\, toads\, and salamanders will emerge from their winter brumination (the amphibian version of ‘hibernation’) and start their trek to their breeding pond.\nYou can help FVC observe these critters by joining us at a wetland to learn about amphibian breeding.\nTake what you learn into your own backyards! Share your observations with us!\nYour help in these surveys and collecting data will contribute to an ongoing amphibian monitoring dataset that will show us hotspots of amphibian activity. These surveys give us an opportunity to continue learning about the amphibian populations in the Ryder Lake area as well.\n\nResponsibilities\n\nLearn about egg masses\, where to find them and how to identify them.\nHelping the project coordinator with observational data collection.\n\nRequirements\n\nBe prepared to spend a few hours outdoors near a wetland/pond.\nRequires access to a vehicle to travel to the meeting point in the Ryder Lake area.\nBring your own water or snacks.\n\nTraining/Safety\n\nAll training required will be provided on the survey day.\nDress appropriately for wet\, cold\, weather. After the meeting\, we will be building a temporary fence along Elk View Road to help amphibians travel back to the wetlands.  \nCome join us for the meeting at 11:00 AM to learn more about this nature-based group in Ryder Lake\, or join us at 11:15 AM to help with our outdoor event. \n\n  \n\nWildlife Protection Event – Temporary Fencing Installation\nThe Work  \n\nWe’re looking for energetic volunteers to help us install 150m of silt fencing to direct amphibians traveling back to the wetlands!\nThis will involve installing fencing along the ditch on Elk View Road.\n\nWhy It’s Helpful\n\nIn late February/early March the amphibians are traveling back to their important breeding wetland in Ryder Lake. DESCRIPTION:Come join us for Salmon in the City in Mission! \nGet exclusive access to this property protected by the FVC \nLearn from speakers about the stream and salmon who spawn here \nSpend a day with other nature enthusiasts and help improve the habitat \n  \nWhat we Will be Doing: \n\nWe’re looking for energetic volunteers to help us clean up and maintain our Windebank Creek property in Mission.\nThis will involve invasive plant removal and some garbage clean up.\nWe will also be planting some willow stakes and dogwood stakes.\nWe will have pizza for lunch while listening to our guest speakers.\n\nWhy it’s Helpful: \n\nCreating a healthy tree canopy along Windebank Creek in Mission\, leads to a healthier stream for salmon to spawn in.\nThis stewardship will help create habitat for local wildlife who also use the area.\n\nTraining/Equipment: \n\nIf you’re able to\, bring your own gloves and pruning shears\, otherwise\, they will be provided.\nInvasive plant removal and garbage clean up training will be provided on site at the beginning of the day.\nShovels and training for willow staking will be provided.\n\nSafety: \n\nWear appropriate clothing for the weather and closed-toed footwear.\n\nSetting: \n\nForested outdoors around a creek.\n\nLocation: \n\nWindebank Creek\, Mission\, BC.\nWe will be meeting at the west end of Logan Avenue\, Mission (next to Embers BBQ House). DESCRIPTION:The Work\n\nWe’re looking for energetic volunteers to help us with the restoration of Horn Creek Park in Abbotsford.\nThis will involve removing some invasive morning glory and blackberry.\n\n\nWhy It’s Helpful\n\nAbbotsford’s Horn Creek Park is home to a multitude of wildlife. You will be helping keep the park in top condition for the wildlife that calls the area home.\nThe fight against invasive plant species is ongoing. SUMMARY:Adult Toad Fencing - 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Work\n\nWe’re looking for energetic volunteers to help us install 150m of silt fencing to direct amphibians travelling back to the wetlands!\nThis will involve installing fencing along the ditch on Elk View Road.\n\nWhy it’s Helpful\n\nIn late February/early March the amphibians are travelling back to their important breeding wetland in Ryder Lake. There is a crossing structure called the “Toad Tunnel”\, that runs under Elk View Road.\nThe fencing you will install helps guide these amphibians to the crossing structure so they can safely pass under the road.\n\nResponsibilities\n\nHelp install the silt fencing.\nUse tools to dig trenches\, hammer in wooden stakes and attach fencing material to the wooden stakes.\n\nRequirements\n\nBe prepared to spend a few hours outdoors alongside a road.\nCan use tools such as shovels to dig into wet ground.\nHammering wooden stakes into the ground\, and using a staple gun to secure the fence.\nWear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear (Rubber boots or hiking boots that can get a little muddy) and work gloves.\nAccess to a vehicle to travel to the Ryder Lake area.\nBring your own water/hot drinks or snacks.\n\nTraining/Equipment\n\nAll training required will be provided on the day-of.\nAll tools will be provided including shovels\, pickaxes\, sledgehammers\, staple guns\, and staples.\nIf you’re able to\, bring your own gloves.\n\nSafety\n\nBring your own mask (mandatory) to wear for check-in\, and when less than 2 meters apart from others.\nDress appropriately for wet\, cold\, weather.\nSafety vests will be provided (let us know if you want to bring your own!).\n\nSetting\n\nOutdoors in the right-of-way adjacent to Elk View Road.\nThere is no shelter or bathroom facilities on site.\n\nLocation\n\nRyder Lake Neighbourhood in Chilliwack\, BC.\nThe exact meeting location will be provided once registered.\n\nCommitment\n\nWednesday\, February 23rd\, 2022\n9:00 AM – 12:00 PM\nRAIN OR SHINE\n\n\nThank you for your interest in Toad Fence Installation!

SUMMARY:Salmon in the City - Windebank Event
DESCRIPTION:The Work\n\nWe’re looking for energetic volunteers to help us with the ongoing restoration of Windebank Creek.\nThis will involve picking up garbage on the property\, some invasive plant control\, as well as helping us plant native shrubs.\nYou will also get an opportunity to learn about the history of Windebank Creek\, see in-person the salmon who depend on it\, and the impacts of climate change\n\nWhy it’s Helpful\n\nWindebank Creek is a salmon-bearing creek that runs through a FVC conservation property in Mission\, BC. You will be helping us keep the property in top condition for the fish and wildlife that call the area home.\nThe fight against invasive plant species is always ongoing\, and your planting of native trees and shrubs will help shade the stream and make it a beautiful space.\n\nResponsibilities\n\nPick up litter on the property.\nDigging holes and planting native trees and shrubs.\nCome with an open mind for learning!\n\nRequirements\n\nBe prepared to spend the time outdoors with minimal seating options\, RAIN OR SHINE.\nBe prepared to clip blackberry\, pull morning glory\, remove garbage\, and plant!\nWear weather-appropriate clothing & sturdy footwear (hiking boots are recommended).\nBring your own refillable water bottle or coffee mug.\n\nTraining/Equipment\n\nIf you’re able to\, bring your own gloves.\nDisposable gloves\, trash bags and tools for litter pick-up will be provided.\nShovels and any other planting tools will be provided.\nPlanting training will be provided on site at the beginning of the day.\n\nSafety\n\nBring your mask (mandatory) to wear for check-in\, and when less than 2 meters apart from people.\n\nSetting\n\nOutdoors at Windebank Creek.\n\nLocation\n\nWindebank Creek Conservation Property\, Mission\, BC.\nWe will be meeting at the dead-end at the west end of Logan Street in Mission\n(Enter “Embers BBQ House” into Google and you will be next to the gate to our property).\n\nCommitment\n\nSaturday\, November 13th\, 2021\n10:00 AM – 2:00 PM\nRAIN OR SHINE
