SUMMARY:Tadpole Professional Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Register now for our 2024 Oregon Spotted Frog Tadpole Identification Workshop! This virtual training workshop will enable environmental professionals to accurately identify and distinguish tadpoles\, metamorphs and juveniles of Lower Mainland frog species caught during work in and around waterways\, ditches\, or wetlands. This is an important professional development opportunity for environmental monitors to ensure due diligence and accuracy in amphibian identification. \nEnvironmental professionals\, contractors\, or government staff – if you will be working in the Lower Mainland you may encounter species at risk including Oregon Spotted Frogs and Northern Red-legged Frogs. Tadpoles can be challenging to identify\, especially when differentiating between these two species. This workshop will outline how you can identify frog tadpoles in the Lower Mainland\, including which features can help you distinguish between the very similar-looking tadpoles\, metamorphs and juveniles of Rana pretiosa and Rana aurora. \nThis training will be provided by Jenn Barden\, Program Coordinator at the Fraser Valley Conservancy\, and Briar Hunter\, Ecosystem Biologist with the Ministry of Water\, Land and Resource Stewardship. Both are specialists in Oregon Spotted Frogs and have extensive amphibian and reptile experience. \nDate: June 20\, 2024 \nTime: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm PDT \nPlatform: Online via Zoom \nCost: $25 per person \nAccess: Participants who pay to attend will receive a link to a recording of the presentation. Those who are unable to attend can still receive a recording by registering. \nAfter the workshop participants will receive a new resource document that can be used to identify Oregon Spotted Frog and Northern Red-legged Frog tadpoles\, metamorphs and juveniles in the field! \nOnce registered\, you will receive an email with session details and a meeting link will be sent out a week before the event. \nREGISTER NOW\nAdditional Information \nThis session is intended for environmental professionals including environmental monitors\, municipal staff\, and decision-makers who may come into contact with Oregon Spotted Frog and its habitat. The Oregon Spotted Frog is highly Endangered (provincially and federally). Within Canada\, it is only known to occur in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. It lives in water year-round and is found in a variety of agricultural ditches\, sloughs\, shallow wetlands\, and marshes. In the past decade\, two new populations of Oregon Spotted Frog have been discovered in Abbotsford and Chilliwack\, suggesting there are more potential areas where this endangered frog may be undiscovered. Oregon Spotted Frogs are most likely to be encountered during regular drainage maintenance works; however\, few environmental monitors are trained in the identification of this cryptic species\, particularly for tadpoles and juveniles. \n  \nFor questions\, please contact Jenn: jenn@fraservalleyconservancy.ca \n  \nThis training is made possible thanks to funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

SUMMARY:Oregon Spotted Frog Professional Training 2024
DESCRIPTION:Register now for the 2024 Oregon Spotted Frog Identification training session. This training will enable environmental monitors (staff or contractors) to accurately identify and distinguish local frog species caught during work in and around waterways\, ditches\, or wetlands. This is an important professional development opportunity for environmental monitors to ensure due diligence and accuracy in amphibian identification. If your organization will be working in Oregon Spotted Frog areas and would like to send a group for hands-on frog identification and habitat recognition training\, please consider this limited-time opportunity. \n  \nTraining will be provided by Jenn Barden and Aleesha Switzer\, specialists in Oregon Spotted Frogs. The charge for this 2.5-hour training session will be $25 per person. Training will take place at an Oregon Spotted Frog wetland site in Agassiz. Additional details will be made available upon registration. \nFour session options are offered across two dates based on the frog breeding window in 2024:\nThursday\, March 14th 9:30am-12:00pm     or     1:00pm-3:30pm \nFriday\, March 15th 9:30am-12:00pm     or     1:00pm-3:30pm \nNote: registration closes at 3:00 pm on Wednesday\, March 13th.  \n  \nDepending on the demand\, new dates may be added. If conditions change\, the dates may need to be adjusted slightly (for example\, if a large freeze event halts breeding and frogs are not available for in-hand identification training). Participants will be notified as quickly as possible if any schedule changes need to be made. \nOnce Registered – You will receive an email with additional details on the session\, including when and where to meet. \nSpace is limited – register now\n  \nAdditional Information\nThis session is intended for environmental professionals including environmental monitors\, municipal staff\, and decision-makers who come into contact with Oregon Spotted Frog and its habitat. Oregon Spotted Frog is highly Endangered (provincially and federally). Oregon Spotted Frogs are most likely to be encountered during regular drainage maintenance works; however\, few environmental monitors are trained in the identification of this cryptic species. \n  \nFor questions\, please contact Jenn: jenn@fraservalleyconservancy.ca \n  \nThis training is made possible thanks to funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

SUMMARY:Haig Highway Planting
DESCRIPTION:Come help us plant 200 native trees and shrubs along a riparian area near Haig Highway to make Agassiz a healthier and happier habitat for all living creatures! A free lunch will be given to all participants! \nWe’re grateful for the opportunity to undertake our second annual planting event along Haig Highway with our Agassiz Habitat Healers team. In 2022\, the Habitat Healers team planted over 400 native trees and shrubs along a section of Haig Highway near Elm Road. This year\, the Habitat Healers team would like you to join them in planting 200 more native trees and shrubs near a riparian area that is behind the dog park section of the walking trail (near the intersection of Haig Highway and Morrow Road). \nThis planting project aims to add vegetation along this riparian area for the betterment of wildlife such as birds\, pollinators\, and aquatic life forms. By planting native trees and shrubs along Haig Highway\, we will stabilize stream banks\, provide shade\, help the soil absorb rainfall\, reduce pollutants\, and create a diverse habitat and travelling corridor for urban wildlife. \nLearn how to select\, propagate\, and plant native trees and shrubs in an urban riparian habitat\, while also planting trees whose shade you’ll walk under for years to come! \nWe will provide all necessary equipment\, as well as refreshments. However\, if you have your own gardening gloves you would rather use\, please feel free to bring them. Please dress in closed-toed shoes\, long sleeves and long pants\, and come prepared to brave any kind of weather! \nChildren are welcome as long as they come with parental supervision. \nWe’ll be meeting near the intersection of Morrow Road and Haig Highway at 9:00 a.m.

SUMMARY:Lane Creek Fall Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Come help us remove litter and invasive plant species from Lane Creek to help prepare the site for our planting event! A free lunch will be provided to all who come out! Also\, free seedlings will be given out to all participants and passers-by so you can plant a native tree and/or shrub in your own backyard! \nWe will provide all necessary equipment\, as well as refreshments. However\, if you have your own gardening gloves or garbage pickers you would rather use\, please feel free to bring them. \nPlease dress in closed-toed shoes\, long sleeves and long pants\, as we may be removing prickly plants\, like the Himalayan Blackberry. \nChildren are welcome as long as they come with parental supervision. \nThe work party will take place rain or shine\, so come prepared to brave any predicament that Mother Nature may throw at us! \nWe’ll be meeting at the back of the Mission Library parking lot at 10:00 a.m.
